Film events
ICA Denver hosts a regular film series and an occasional book study group including facilitated conversations. Various metro area churches are hosting the film The Iman and The Pastor, a documentary of how two men overcame their fears and assumptions and stopped the violence in Nigeria. Films are chosen for their portrayal of diverse cultural values and/or insights offered for community environmental resiliency.  Books are recommended by study participants. The most recent book studied was Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth. Would you like to attend a film or book event? Or suggest a film or host the event? Or host a viewing of The Iman and the Pastor at your local church? Phone Catherine at 303-355-8114.

Environmental Sustainability Dialogues among communities, governments, nonprofits, and industry
Oil depletion and global warming are well-documented issues about which many governmental initiatives are under consideration.  Addressing policy alone will not make the changes that are now urgent. Local action is required and all players need to be around the table.  See (in process) white paper on environmental sustainability -

Immigration Dialogues in Communities
Dealing with immigrants and refugees is a high profile issue in Colorado with a variety of governmental initiatives under consideration. How do we develop thoughtful and sensible policies for integrating those new to the U.S. into our population? This issue is one where we find Coloradans much divided. How does this affect your community and how can ordinary citizens respond with care? See (in process) white paper on immigration -

Completed Projects

Archdiocesan Housing Resident Council Training
In the spring of 2010, ICA Denver created a customized curriculum and trained Resident Council potential leaders to work with their fellow residents in holding effective meetings, hosting great events (including getting the word out), and dealing with tough issues. Those leaders, who with great pluck and spirit face daunting challenges on a daily basis, now plan to continue working across their four sites and plan not only to increase Resident Council participation at their our sites, but to involve the Archdiocesan Housing's fifth site as well.

Community Safety Leadership Training (CSLT)
ICA Denver partnered with Mercy Housing’s Refugee Services division during 2007 and early 2008 to provide three Community Safety Leadership Training programs for residents in their affordable housing apartment complexes.  The training had two objectives:  1) to familiarize refugees with common safety practices to protect their families and enhance life-safety in their living environments; and 2) to promote positive interaction between the refugees and their neighbors.  The training sessions included refugees from several different African countries, Afghanistan, Burma, and Myanmar, as well as African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, and Anglo residents.  To overcome language barriers, much of the curriculum was reinforced via role play and visual props that helped everyone to actively engage in the training regardless of English proficiency.

Neighborhood Academy
From the fall of 2004 through the spring of 2005, local ICA Denver colleagues partnered with Rocky Mountain Mutual Housing Association, Inc. (the Mutual), to conduct the first Neighborhood Academy held at the Mutual’s Garden Court/Heritage Estates community, located in the East Colfax neighborhood.  Residents there are a diverse group, primarily immigrants from more than ten African countries.  Ater learning ToP® facilitation skills, participants decided to work with city officials and other community residents, including the more affluent Lowry neighborhood, to address safety at the corner of 11th and Syracuse, which was experiencing increasingly heavy traffic and numerous accidents. As a result of their efforts, traffic lights were slated for installation on 11th at both Syracuse and Uinta.
